The first time I heard Summertime by Gene Harris, I was on the way home from work one sunny afternoon. The music hit me so hard I had to pull over and just listen. It was the longest of the versions that Harris has published, so I sat on the side of the road for a good eight minutes… SO glad I did, because while the first two minutes were incredible, the rest was masterful. I just could not believe my ears.

Since then, I’ve fallen in love with just about every piece of Gene’s music, especially “Uptown Sop” and “The Real Blues” with the Ray Brown Trio. As a Lindy Hopper and blues dancer, it has been a BLAST to dance to nearly all of his music.

I’ve not yet been, but I am dying to get to the Gene Harris Festival in Boise, Idaho.

That will be my highlight of this summer!

My goodness! This performance is excellent. I’ve never seen this video before. Meshell is one of my favorite bass players, and it’s always good to see her perform live. I’m hoping she gets back to the SF Bay Area soon.
